Our Sacred Origins

Born in the Heartlands of Mithilanchal

For millennia, women across the Mithila region of Bihar have expressed cosmology, nature, fertility, and divine stories through intricate ritual murals on the mud-plastered walls of their courtyards. Recognized worldwide as Madhubani painting, this sacred craft encompasses distinct, ancient stylistic lineages: Bharni, Kachni, Tantrik, Godna, and Gobar.

However, for decades, commercial middlemen and unauthorized trading syndicates paid artists a pittance while mass-marketing substandard replicas. Apan Mithila Foundation was founded to reclaim this sacred cultural heritage, eliminating middlemen and empowering master artists with economic sovereignty, global respect, and fair compensation.

"Every stroke of a nib in Madhubani is not merely color on canvas; it is a sacred prayer of our grandmothers, preserved with dignity and passed down through generations."

— Apan Mithila Foundation Artisan Council
